About AFS Sections

The American Folklore Society is home to more than 30 special-interest groups that serve as gathering places and forums within the Society for people with common interests in the field.

Anyone may join AFS sections, but you must have a current AFS membership or a web-only account to access the AFS website and add or renew AFS sections. Once logged in, you have direct control of your AFS section membership: from a section's private page, simply click on the "Join Group" button in the upper left corner.

View a complete list of sections here.

To view your current section memberships, click here or select Groups from the Profile menu. Pay your dues when you join AFS or renew your AFS membership, or pay through the online store at any time of year.

Section Activities

Many groups serve as conversation groups, and hold gatherings at the Society’s annual meeting where members can share news about work in their areas of interest.

Other groups are active throughout the year:

  • Some sections give prizes to recognize and encourage good work in their area(s) of interest.
  • A few sections produce publications, many of which are open-access. Subscriptions to a section's print publication is included in paid section membership.
  • Members of AFS sections can fully participate in a section-member-only online community within the AFS website, which supports collaboration via group web pages, wikis, forums, blogs and galleries.
  • Some sections maintain on-going conversations on listservs or other social media tools. AFS interest groups that foster online discussion off of the AFS website may be found on Online Folklore Communities and Discussion Groups.

Find out more about the specific activities of individual groups by checking their public pages in the AFS Section List or by reviewing their reports in the AFS Annual Reports, starting in 2012. If you still have questions, contact the conveners listed on each page for more information or contact us at AmericanFolkloreSociety@gmail.com.

Though anyone can freely join AFS sections, most sections depend on annual dues to support section activities such as prizes and publications; the dues amount varies from section to section. Support sections by paying your dues when when you join AFS or renew your AFS membership, or pay dues anytime through the online store at any time of year.

You can also make an additional contribution to support a section here.

To manage your section memberships:

  • View your section memberships by signing in, then clicking on Groups in the Profile Menu. Clicking on any group on your Groups page will take you to that section's group home page.
  • To receive notices of group forum activity, choose Forums in the group menu, then "Subscribe to Instant Updates" for an email alert for each posting, or "Subscribe to Digest" for an email of all section Forum postings on any given day.
  • Use the "Directory and Features" button on the group home page to view a list of the group's members; click on an individual to view his or her profile. Most individual profiles include a link for direct email.
  • To leave a group, find the "Options" button, then click on "Leave This Group."
