Why join the American Folklore Society?

The greatest benefit of belonging to AFS is participating in the premier professional society in the world devoted to folklore. Most of our members say they belong to the Society to express their professional identity, to build professional and personal relationships, and to keep abreast of new research in folklore.

You can be part of this by joining AFS or renewing your membership today!

Learn about membership categories and dues here. As a member of the Society, you'll receive these benefits:

  • 4 print issues per year of the Journal of American Folklore, widely recognized as the leading journal in our field. Or, opt out of mailings and use your...
  • FREE online access to full-text, searchable versions of current and recent past issues of the Journal of American Folklore via Project MUSE (sign in to gain access through the member-only benefits page, or learn more about Project MUSE).
  • A substantial discount on registration for the Society’s annual meeting, the high point of many AFS members’ professional year.
  • Search and access the AFS Member Directory. Choose to make yourself accessible to other members by keeping your own contact information up to date, as well as your areas of interest, experience, and more (don't forget to update your Profile).
  • Contribute to the AFS website by adding and responding to content in the AFS Review and the AFS Forums.
  • Join any of AFS’s more than 30+ sections, special-interest groups within the Society.
  • Become eligible to receive AFS prizes and AFS section prizes.
  • Take part in AFS special projects restricted to members (for example, as part of the Veterans History Project partnership, AFS members participate in paid consultancies and lead community-based workshops on collecting oral histories from US military veterans).
  • Make your voice heard by voting in Society elections, running for Society office, or serving as a member of one of the Society’s committees or working groups.
  • Sign in to access records of your previous membership dues payments, donations, and other order history (including AFS Section dues paid through the store, and Annual Meeting registration fees).

Members receive access and discounts for these opportunities:

  • Online access to JSTOR's folklore journals for only $15/year. Enjoy fully-searchable digital back issues of four of the world's major English-language folklore journals—Folklore, the Journal of American Folklore, the Journal of Folklore Research, and Western Folklore. Sign in to subscribe.
  • A subscription to JSTOR's JPASS service for just $99/year, a 50% savings off the regular annual price. This provides individuals who don't have institutional access to JSTOR with full access to more than 1,500 journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Designed for those without institutional access to the JSTOR archival collections, JPASS is ideal for society members working outside of the academy, and for adjuncts with sporadic access to library resources. Sign in for the member-only subscription link, or just learn more about JPASS.
  • Access to subscribe to the American Council of Learned Societies Humanities E-Book (HEB), available only to members of ACLS societies. Individual subscriptions are $40.00 for a twelve-month subscription. The subscription offers unlimited access to 4,315 (and growing) cross-searchable, full-text titles across the humanities and related social sciences. The collection comprises both in- and out-of-print titles ranging from the 1880s through the present, and includes many prize-winning works. Find our more about how to subscribe, or simply learn more about HEB.
