New in 2014: Schedule Adjustments

The 2013 meeting participant survey confirmed that meeting participants valued the extra time for informal conversations and networking that was built into the 2013 annual meeting schedule. In 2014, we will continue to create opportunities for informal engagement by offering a long lunch and other unscheduled hours.

However, this year, general sessions will not be scheduled for Wednesday, the first day of the meeting. All panels proposed by AFS members will be scheduled Thursday through Saturday, as in years past.

Instead, for those who can attend on Wednesday, we are working on local and Section-sponsored programming at the Convention Center, in addition to professional development workshop and tours. The opening ceremony and plenary address will take place as usual on Wednesday evening.

Presentation Policies

This year, we will continue to enforce our limit on individual participation in presentations. See our Annual Meeting policies for more information about these and other meeting policies:

Number of Presentations

You may present only once at the annual meeting. "Presenting" means: giving a paper, poster, Diamond presentation, or participating in a Forum in any way.

However, individuals may also serve as chair or discussant in one other paper or Diamond panel. Forums do not have comparable chairs or discussants, because all participants have equal access to the floor.

No one may participate in more than two sessions altogether.

Exceptions will be made only for those who are invited by AFS to present in the service of an AFS project.

In years past, participants were allowed to participate in two Forums, or to present a paper and participate in a Forum. This is no longer the case.

Presentations that have been given at previous AFS annual meetings will not be sent to the planning committee for review. Films may be re-presented once if the work has been substantially revised since the previous showing; thus, a filmmaker may show a rough cut and the (nearly) final product, but may not present the same title more than twice.

Our definition of forums has not changed; please remember that forums should not include formal presentations, though they may include very brief (5 minute) remarks from each participant to orient the discussion. All participants in Forums are considered analogous to other presenters, not paper panel chairs or discussants.

If your panel proposal includes formal presentations, you should submit a paper panel proposal, even if you anticipate lengthy discussion. Contact Lorraine Walsh Cashman at if you have any questions or concerns about your panel format.
