2015 Annual Meeting: Submitting a Proposal Online
Thank you for your interest in participating in the American Folklore Society’s 2015 Annual Meeting in Long Beach, California. The deadline for submitting online or mailed-in proposals for the meeting program is March 31.

Important Notices

Important NoteIndividuals may present only once at the annual meeting. "Presenting" means giving a paper, Diamond presentation, or participating in a Forum in any way. See Annual Meeting Policies for information about the few exceptions to this rule.

Important NoteDon't register for the annual meeting until you have ready all the information required for your proposal type. The proposal form is only available once, right after your meeting registration goes through. If you leave the form before hitting "submit," you may have to register again to access the proposal form. In that case, contact for help.

All Proposals

All proposal forms ask for keywords approved by the AFS Ethnographic Thesaurus that describe the content of the presentation (eg, genre, group, place and approach). See Using Keywords in Annual Meeting Proposals before you register and submit your proposal.

Proposals for Individual Presentations

Those who propose an individual presentation will, in one sitting, register for the annual meeting, submit payment, then submit the proposal. If accepted, individual presentations will be grouped with others in a two-hour session. Please click on the links below for instructions specific to each presentation type.

Proposals for Preorganized Sessions

The chair of a preorganized session submits all the information for the session. This means that the chair will register only him/herself for the annual meeting, then submit the proposal for the session, including the information about the session as a whole and the information about each participant.
Please click on the links below for instructions specific to each presentation type. Chairs of preorganized sessions are responsible for requesting accommodations in advance for all the participants' audiovisual and scheduling needs.

Those who propose to participate in a preorganized session must:
  • submit their information to the chair of the session well before the March 31 deadline.
  • register for the annual meeting by March 31.
Registration for the Annual Meeting

Those who are proposing individual presentations or who are chairing preorganized sessions will register at the time that they submit the proposal.

Those who propose to present in a preorganized session but not act as chair should register before March 31.

Those who will not present may register online at preregistration rates until August 31. On site registration will be available at a higher rate.

If you are a member of AFS, it is critical that you sign in before beginning the registration or proposal process.

You must be signed in to receive the reduced member registration rate and to preserve your registration receipts.

Student and low-income members of AFS enjoy considerable savings over nonmembers in meeting registration rates.

If you are not a member of AFS, why not join now to take advantage of the discount, and all the other benefits of membership
? (Note: You can not join AFS and register at the member rate in one sitting: your membership must be manually approved by AFS staff before you can access member benefits; that administrative process may take a few days. You can sign in and submit your registration and/or proposal after you receive an email notification that your membership is activated. Join AFS by March 27 if you want to be sure that you can submit a proposal and register at the member rate!)

Need Help? See the Annual Meeting in FAQ, which includes a video demonstration of submitting a proposal, or Contact Us.

Important Note! The online proposal process for individual presentations requires you first to submit your meeting registration form and payment, and then to follow immediately with your proposal submission.

Do not start this process until you are ready to finish it.

A video with step-by-step instructions is available in FAQ.
