The AFS Nominating Committee (Suzy Seriff, chair; and Christina Barr, Amy Skillman, and Stephen Winick) is happy to announce its slate of two candidates for each available office in the AFS 2011 election.

Executive Board

Jade Banks, Mind-Builders Creative Arts Center, Bronx, New York
Nadia DeLeon, Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green
David Todd Lawrence, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota
Jerrilyn McGregory, Florida State University, Tallahassee
Solimar Otero, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge
Juwen Zhang, Willamette University, Salem, Oregon

Nominating Committee

Patricia Sawin, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Sally Van de Water, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, Baltimore, Maryland

[Note: Presidential elections take place only in even-numbered years.]

The AFS Bylaws offers members the opportunity to add names to this slate by petition. Here is the process: by September 15, submit to AFS Executive Director Tim Lloyd (, by PDF attachment to an email, 1) a petition signed by at least 10 current AFS members that names the candidate and the office for which s/he is being nominated, 2) a statement from the candidate agreeing to run, 3) a 100-word biographical summary, and 4) a 250-word platform statement responding to the question "What are the most significant opportunities or challenges now facing the Society, and how as a member of the [Executive Board / Nominating Committee] would I respond to those opportunities or challenges?"

We will post biographical summaries and platform statements from all candidates on the elections page of the AFS web site on September 15.

We have invited all candidates to participate in a Candidates' Forum on Saturday afternoon of the Bloomington annual meeting, and we invite all Society members who will be at the meeting to attend and hear the candidates speak. Secure online voting will begin around November 1 and will continue through December 31. Those elected will take office on January 1, 2012, and will serve on the Board or Nominating Committee through 2014.

Our thanks go to the members of the Committee for their work to assemble this slate, and to all candidates for their willingness to serve the field and Society.
