The Missouri Folk Arts Program at the University of Missouri seeks to contract with a professional folklorist to conduct a folklife/arts field survey with documentation in Missouri’s Northern Plains, such as the following north central counties: Saline, Carroll, Livingston, Caldwell, Daviess, Grundy, Howard, Chariton, Linn, Sullivan, Randolph, Macon, and Adair.

The field survey is a major component in MFAP’s “Show-Me Folk” efforts to engage new-to-us traditional artists; engender deeper understanding of established and emerging cultural communities; and spark a working relationship between MFAP, its partners, and those artists for projects and public programs. The highlighted, rural counties historically share geology, geography, and some traditions. Alternately, these counties also are culturally on the fringes of other regions: the northernmost edges of “Little Dixie,” as well as the “Boonslick” and the westernmost edge of northeast Missouri. Older immigrants hailed from Ireland and Germany, for instance, while more recent immigrants have arrived from El Salvador, Peru, and central Africa—among other communities.
