The Archives and Libraries Section of the American Folklore Society offers stipends of up to $750 for folklore or ethnomusicology projects with a significant connection to libraries and/or archives. The prize honors the late Polly Grimshaw, curator of the folklore collection at Indiana University Libraries.

Eligible projects include but are not limited to:

  • Travel to enable on-site research in a library or archive collection
  • Attendance at an upcoming American Folklore Society annual meeting, or similar AFS-sponsored event, to present papers or posters with a significant connection to libraries/archives (proof of formal acceptance required before the prize is awarded)
  • Other research costs for projects based upon specific archival or library collections, or concerning problems, issues, or methods of information organization and retrieval in folklore/ethnomusicology

The Libraries and Archives Section awards the Grimshaw Prize in odd-numbered years. In even-numbered years, the McCallum Prize is awarded for exceptional completed work dealing with folklife archives or the collection, organization, and/or management of folklife materials.
