Tour: Markets and Communities

Immigrants and refugees in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area have long created and been sustained by marketplaces. Rich with traditional foods, clothing, music, art, and materials for magic, healing, and religion, these are key social spaces, and are vital sources for culturally significant goods. This tour will visit four such markets.

1:00—4:00 pm

Workshop: Experiments in Exhibition: Folk Art and Activism
Sponsored by Walker Art Center and the Folklore and Museums Section

This year's workshop spotlights some of the many traditional arts-and-activism resources of the Twin Cities to ask how folklorists can be better allies for their community partners to mobilize for action around pressing issues of conscience in our world.

Tour: Community Cultural Anchors: Neighborhood Foodways

Minneapolis' Phillips Neighborhood has been shaped by waves of immigration, starting with German and Irish, later Swedish and Norwegian and now Mexican, Hmong, Somali and Ojibwe and Dakota nations. This tour offers an opportunity to explore some of the vibrant neighborhood’s foodways and cultural centers that support the ongoing continuity of cultural traditions and expression. Participants will enjoy Nordic, Somali and First Nations' coffee/tea and pastry favorites as they learn about the cultural anchors serving these communities.
