A Transition and an Opportunity

AFS Executive Director Tim Lloyd will be retiring in early 2018. All of us on the Executive Board thank him for his extraordinary leadership of, and service to, the Society and field since 2001. With Tim’s guidance, AFS has made great progress over the past 17 years. We have been most fortunate to have such valuable leadership and commitment over this extended period. And we look forward to celebrating Tim and his many accomplishments, even as we seek the right person to lead us after he steps down.

His departure creates a remarkable occasion for someone to become the next Executive Director of AFS. We are now starting the process of identifying exemplary people in our field who are excited about joining with the Board and staff to lead the AFS in its next phase, and who will bring new strengths and perspectives to the opportunities and challenges we face. The position announcement is now available at, and we will accept applications through the deadline date of July 17, 2017. [Note: We needed to shorten our original announcement text somewhat to meet IU length standards. The complete original announcement is at] The starting date for the position is given as January 1, 2018, but we can be flexible about that date.

The announcement provides details about the executive director’s responsibilities, the qualifications we’re looking for in a candidate, and the Indiana University-based benefits of the position. For the moment, we’ll just say that we are looking for a folklorist with a strong network across the field, fundraising and partnership-building skills, a commitment to the goals and priorities for the Society set by the Board, and an understanding of the issues that face folklore studies in the academy and the public sphere. Within the limits of financial and human resources, this position offers a good deal of opportunity, since the Board gives broad independence, flexibility, and decision-making authority to the Executive Director to take actions, and to initiate and develop projects, that will advance the Board’s goals and priorities.

The Executive Board has formed a Succession Committee made up of recent Society Presidents, and other present and future leaders in the field, to manage this process on the Board’s behalf. Both of us are Committee members, along with Tim, Kurt Dewhurst, Diane Goldstein, Bill Ivey, Todd Lawrence, Solimar Otero, Maida Owens, Cassie Patterson, Pat Turner, and Michael Ann Williams. This Committee prepared the position announcement and will review applications for the position. A smaller group from the Committee will conduct first interviews with semi-finalists, and will recommend final candidates for second interviews with the Executive Board at our annual meeting this October in Minneapolis.

If you have questions about the position, please contact Tim Lloyd at before July 12 (please note that this is a few days before the application deadline). After his successor begins work, Tim will continue to serve AFS during a period of orientation for the new director, and after that as our Senior Advisor for Partnerships, including those with China and in the archival and scholarly communications world

Thank you for your support of our Society and field. And please join us in thanking Tim for the many years he gave us when, in fact, he could easily have enjoyed fame and fortune as a rock’n’roll drummer!

With best wishes,
Kay Turner, AFS President
Dorry Noyes, AFS President-Elect
