The Society of Americanists is currently seeking to develop a pipeline of high-quality submissions for their upcoming volumes. Submissions are encouraged on all topics and methods in the cultural study of the United States. Special volume, special section or feature, and review proposals are also welcome.

The journal publishes work in a variety of formats, including research articles; forum, discussion, memorial, and state-of-the-field essays; dialogues and interviews; reports on programs, organizations, and pedagogy; as well as book, exhibit, and media reviews. Multimedia content is encouraged and can be accommodated at the discretion of the editors. Submissions undergo a rigorous multi-tiered peer review process which includes the journal’s editorial staff, advisory board members, and external reviewers.

About the Journal

Founded in 2016, SOAR is the peer-reviewed flagship publication of the Society of Americanists. The journal’s mission is to bring together a broadly interdisciplinary and international conversation on the history, culture, and social life of the United States. Guided by a diverse editorial advisory board composed of distinguished scholars at institutions across the globe, SOAR is positioned to define new dialogues and research directions for scholars in a range of fields whose work is devoted to the exploration of United States. Although arising from discussions within the American studies movement, SOAR charts a distinctive location for scholarly discourse on American thought and culture in a global context, with the hopes of reinvigorating discussions on a broad range of scholarly methods, topics, and perspectives.

SOAR is published once annually in an open-access online format hosted by the Pennsylvania State University. With a commitment to promoting accessible scholarship and open dialogue, SOAR makes all journal content available online at no cost. However, the journal will also available for purchase in an on-demand printed form as well.  For more information visit the SOA website at:
