Founded in 2016, The Society of Americanists Review (SOAR) is the peer-reviewed flagship publication of the Society of Americanists. The journal’s mission is to bring together a broadly interdisciplinary and international conversation on the history, culture, and social life of the United States. Guided by a diverse editorial advisory board composed of distinguished scholars at institutions across the globe, SOAR is positioned to define new dialogues and research directions for scholars in a range of fields whose work is devoted to the exploration of United States. Although arising from discussions within the American studies movement, SOAR charts a distinctive location for scholarly discourse on American thought and culture in a global context, with the hopes of reinvigorating discussions on a broad range of scholarly methods, topics, and perspectives.

SOAR is published once annually in an open-access online format hosted by the Pennsylvania State University. With a commitment to promoting accessible scholarship and open dialogue, SOAR makes all journal content available online at no cost. However, the journal will also available for purchase in an on-demand printed form as well.

The journal publishes work in a variety of formats, including research articles; forum, discussion, memorial, and state-of-the-field essays; dialogues and interviews; reports on programs, organizations, and pedagogy; as well as book, exhibit, and media reviews. Multimedia content is encouraged and can be accommodated at the discretion of the editors. Submissions undergo a rigorous multi-tiered peer review process which includes the journal’s editorial staff, advisory board members, and external reviewers.
