By Jose Manuel de Prada --

The man who cursed the wind / The man wat die wind vervloek het (African Sun Press with the Centre for African Studies, UCT), the first collection of narratives based on the fieldwork I have been conducting in the Karoo since 2011, came out of the press this past October.

Helena was present in many of those trips and contributed to them in many crucial ways.

The book is bilingual, Afrikaans-English, and has been beautifully designed by Gaelen Pinnock and produced by great care by Patricia Schonstein and her African Sun Press.

In the second half of November, together with archaeologist Louisa Hutten, I revisited the places where the stories were recorded, to hand copies of the book to the storytellers represented in it, and also to public libraries and other local institutions.

I sent to Helena some of the photos taken during the trip, and she produced this little video:

It was a most moving experience.

The book was very well received, and we hope that this will be just the beginning of a larger initiative aimed at documenting and making known the rich and so far very neglected culture of the Afrikaans-speaking communities of the Karoo.

We also aim at engaging these communities in the recording and archiving of their unique traditional heritage.

If you want copies of this book you can order them by contacting Patricia Schonstein:
