The Opie Prize Committee of the Children’s Folklore Section of the American Folklore Society is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Opie Prize for the best book-length publication in children’s folklore, Children’s Games in the New Media Age: Childlore, Media and the Playground (Ashgate, 2014), edited by Andrew Burn and Chris Richards. Dedicated to Iona Opie, this collection of essays builds upon the Opies’ work, reexamining the Opies’ audio recordings and introducing new ethnographies of playground games and research into online behavior. The book eloquently demonstrates how children’s play adapts to changing technology and other aspects of contemporary culture.
