From Cassie Rosita Patterson (Center for Folklore Studies, The Ohio State University) -- You are invited to join us at the 2016 Midwest Folklorist's Retreat (MFR) in Columbus, Ohio from May 19-22, 2016. This year's hosts are Dr. Katherine Borland and Dr. Cassie Patterson of the Center for Folklore Studies (CFS) at Ohio State University. The MFR is a biennial gathering of folklorists and like-minded colleagues in the Midwest (broadly defined). Some activities on our agenda include neighborhood and cultural tours, professional development workshops, opportunities to sample local foodways, planning sessions for the region, student-folklorist interactions, and professional networking.

We recently created a webpage with information about the group and a listserv which will serve as the primary mode of communication for information and updates. We also have a Facebook group. If you identify as a Midwestern folklorist or would be interested in staying informed of our events and activities, join us!

This year, the CFS has invited folklorist and storyteller, Jo Radner, to offer a public performance of Burnt into Memory, a story based on oral history research into the devastating 1947 fire in Brownfield, Maine, and to lead our group in a professional development session about using oral performance techniques to enhance oral presentations.  Jo will also be working with OSU students on soliciting stories in oral interviews, and we hope to set up opportunities for students to conduct professional life reviews with retreat attendees, which would then be deposited at the CFS Archives.  Additionally, CFS is collaborating with the Barnett Center for Integrated Arts and Enterprise, the James Preston Poindexter Foundation, and the King Arts Complex-longstanding cornerstones of African American communities living in and around Columbus' East Side--to develop tours and workshops centered around topics of race, class, gender, place, space, community, neighborhood, art, city planning, and economics.

If you are interested in joining us for the 2016 MFR, please fill out this pre-registration form. This will help us get an estimate of how many attendees to expect and determine our budget for the year. Past retreat registration fees have been approximately $250 (including lodging).

Thank you, and we look forward to having you here in Columbus!
