Scholars can be among the first to hear of calls for papers and conferences from around the world with the help of H-Net: Humanities & Social Sciences Online, "an international interdisciplinary organization of scholars and teachers dedicated to developing the enormous educational potential of the Internet and the World Wide Web." Through the networks managed by H-Net, individuals can accomplish a variety of things, like publish peer-reviewed essays, share multimedia materials, or carry out discussions with colleagues and the general public. H-Net's main office is at Michigan State University's History Department, but H-Net staff and subscribers come from all over the globe (

H-Net manages a public network on folklore and ethnology called H-Folk. With 851 subscribers, H-Folk provides a means for folklorists from around the world to share and discuss relevant news items, resources, and opportunities of interest with others in the field. Though H-Folk is web-based, subscribers receive an email notification of new postings.

To sign-up for H-Folk, follow these simple instructions:

I. Create an account on the H-Net Commons:

  • Go to
  • Click the "Sign Up" link in the upper right of the page.
  • Follow the rest of the instructions on screen.
  • Confirm your account via the e-mail with which you signed up.

II. Subscribe to the H-Folk Network:

  • Make sure that you are already signed into your H-Net Commons account.
  • Click "All Networks" which appears near the top of any page.
  • Search for "H-Folk” by typing it into the search bar provided or scroll down to and select the "Cultural History/Studies,” category. Then select "H-Folk.”
  • Click the "Subscribe to this Network" image which appears on the right sidebar (you may have to scroll down a bit to find it).
  • You will see a notice that your subscription has been entered. An editor still must approve it; you will receive an email confirmation when that is done.

These instructions may also be accessed via the H-Net Help Desk at

I find that H-Folk on H-net is very helpful for me. Thanks for making such a valuable network.
