In order for the Orthodox church to effectively work in the world and fulfill its mission there is a need for Orthodox Christians to actively address social issues such as gender with compelling, compassionate, and rigorous scholarship. At this point in time there are relatively few accessible works that address issues of gender and sexuality from Orthodox perspectives. Of the volumes that do exist many are dated, limited in scope, or have fallen to the temptation to resort to preexisting polemics which have their roots outside Orthodox thought. The purpose of this collection is to foster scholarship and discussion about gender by engaging upcoming scholars and thinkers in and outside the church with the goal of nuanced, applicable, contemporary, and stimulating scholarship on gender.

This volume welcomes articles and submissions from multiple Orthodox perspectives from multiple areas of study including patristic, theological, cultural, anthropological, philosophical, folkloric, political, psychological,  activism/social justice as well as interdisciplinary projects.  Orthodox scholars, writers, theologians, activists, from various fields and those utilizing Orthodox theological sources are invited to present new, innovative, and reflective work on gender and contemporary society.

In order to capture the experiences of gender and to make this text practical and useful outside a purely academic circles, this collection is also seeking short reflective pieces on experiences and narratives of gender. It is hoped that these narratives will not only provide context and humanity to the theories, it will make this text more useful to those working directly with people, such as clergy.
