The American Folklore Society is pleased to invite submissions for the 2015 Chicago Folklore Prize, which recognizes the best book-length work of folklore scholarship for the year. First awarded in 1928, the Chicago Folklore Prize is the oldest international award of its kind for publishing in folklore. AFS and the University of Chicago jointly offer the prize.

From its inception, the administrators and judges for the prize have interpreted “folklore” in a broad and inclusive sense, and winners have traditionally come from such diverse fields as folklore, cultural studies, ethnomusicology, literary studies, anthropology, sociology, cultural geography, and dance ethnology. This list of recent winners demonstrates the disciplinary range and breadth of subject matter represented in the competition. AFS encourages entries from scholars in folklore and related fields and from their publishers all over the world.

Works submitted for the 2015 prize must be new monographs published between January 1, 2014, and April 1, 2015. AFS will not consider articles, dissertations, reissues of older works (unless they have been substantially revised and rewritten), editions of works by others, or works-in-progress. A modest cash award is made to the winner or winners of the prize. If no entry is deemed worthy, no prize will be awarded. The winner will be announced at the American Folklore Society’s October 2015 annual meeting in Long Beach, California.

To have it considered for this year’s prize, please submit three copies of your entry to:
