Nominations for the 2013 Archie Green Public Folklore Advocacy Award are now being accepted via this online form.

For the first time, the award now carries a monetary cash prize of $500. The deadline for submitting all materials in support of a candidate's nomination is by close of business on September 23. The Awards committee and the Section co-conveners will review applications and announce the awardee as soon as possible after the closing deadline.

While nominations can be made for anyone in the United States whose accomplishments fit the criteria, we strongly encourage nominations for individuals who live and work in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions to enable the attendance of the awardee, family and community members at the annual meetings in Providence, RI.

Established in 2009 in honor of the preeminent labor scholar and passionate advocate for the discipline of folklore (1917-2009), the Archie Green Public Folklore Advocacy Award is presented by the Public Programs Section of the American Folklore Society to individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation and encouragement of folk traditions in the United States while operating professionally outside the field of public folklore. The award is intended for living individuals whose work is allied or complementary to our field and has advanced the mission of public folklore.

Previous Awardees:
  • Tom Davenport, filmmaker and creator of Folkstreams
  • Jack Loeffler, author and producer
  • Patty Miller, director of the Basque Museum and Cultural Center in Boise, Idaho.
