On May 23-24, 2013, the American Folklore Society and the China Folklore Society sponsored the fourth and final event in a series of bilingual conferences on folklore and intangible cultural heritage in China and the US. Vanderbilt University's US-China Center for Education and Culture, and Sun Yat-Sen University's Institute of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage, also supported the conference.

This fourth conference took place at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. Major support for the conference series (as part of their support of the larger AFS-CFS collaboration) was provided by the Asia Program of the Henry Luce Foundation. Additional support for this event was provided by the Division of Research Programs of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by the Office of the Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture of the Smithsonian Institution.

As in the three earlier gatherings, this conference featured presentations by four Chinese and four US scholars, each followed by prepared responses by a scholar from the other country and open discussion, participated in by the approximately 60 conference attendees.

The program book for the conference is now available in PDF format on the AFS web site. The AFS is now working on compiling the proceedings of all four conferences, which will be published in an open-access online edition later this summer.
