The Illinois Humanities Council, with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, has just launched Looking@Democracy, a major national competition for short digital media pieces that offer fresh, creative ideas about the importance of government in our lives or ways in which individuals and communities can come together to strengthen American
democracy. This project seeks new ideas that can lead to real action to improve how our government addresses issues affecting individuals and communities.

This competition might be an opportunity for folklorists to offer insights on ways in which folk culture(s), community dynamics, and public discourse interrelate. It also could be an outlet for the talents that many of you have for creative applications of digital media.

The challenge will award a total of $100k in prizes. To encourage a wide range of submissions, there are also awards under the People’s Choice and Emerging Artists categories.

The challenge is now accepting submissions through April 30, 2013
. The official website is The complete rules and additional information are available there.

Any digital formats are welcome, from short videos, audio clips, animations, music videos, public service announcements, infographics, and graphic art to Facebook and iPhone apps. The competition is open to independent media makers, investigative reporters, students, graphic designers and artists—anyone with creative ideas to help engage Americans and contribute to the political discussion in a fresh and engaging way.

A panel of expert judges from media and non-profits will judge the submissions.
