AFS Executive Board April 2011 Meeting Summary

At its April 8-9 meeting in Columbus, Ohio, the AFS Executive Board took the following actions:

1. Approved the minutes of the October 2010 meeting

2. Accepted the Society’s FY 2010 audit report, which confirmed the Society’s good financial position and accurate financial record-keeping

3. Selected the recipient of the 2011 AFS Kenneth Goldstein Award for Lifetime Academic Leadership

4. Accepted the report of the Society’s ad hoc Public Relations Committee, and instructed the executive director to work with the committee to find ways to begin implementing its recommendations

5. Approved a set of recommendations for strengthening the Society’s activities to increase diversity among the membership, including a proposal to the membership to amend the "committees” portion of the Society’s Bylaws to make the Cultural Diversity Task Force a permanent standing committee

6. Approved a proposal to create a new author-rights policy for contributions to the Journal of American Folklore

7. Approved the executive director’s budget proposal for FY 2012 (September 2011-August 2012)

8. Approved a proposal to study ways of enhancing the Society’s international outreach by providing journals and other publications to scholars in political, economic, or geographic isolation

The Board also discussed the following matters:
  • the long-term future of the hard-copy version of the Journal of American Folklore
  • potential annual meeting sites for 2014, 2015, and 2016
  • current and potential Society activities to convene academic folklore departments and public folklore organizations to discuss long-term needs and recommend helpful Society actions in response to those needs
  • the need for attention to greater coordination among the Society's increasing number of international activities
The Board also formed a committee of its members to study and propose revisions to the Society’s procedure for remembering departed members at the annual meeting.
