2019 Annual Meeting One of Biggest Recent AFS Gatherings, Well-Attended by Newcomers

2019 almost set a record for AFS annual meeting attendance with 825 confirmed participants, the second biggest turn out since staff started tracking the meeting ten years ago. Only the 2014 meeting in Santa Fe attracted more people.

Notably, fully 25% of meeting participants attended for the first time, coming from across the country and around the world. Yet local outreach particularly paid off: due to the efforts of local committee members, who prioritized engaging community practitioners, one in ten meeting participants were Maryland residents who had not attended AFS before.

Every year, AFS attempts to reduce barriers to attending the annual meeting, and to foster participation, especially by students, people of color, international attendees, and local colleagues who may be new to the Society. All in all, in 2019, AFS provided travel support in some form to 37 individuals, and extended about 180 complimentary registrations, mostly to local colleagues and guests.
