Dear AFS meeting attendees and members,

We have spoken with the President of UNITE HERE Local 7 who represents workers at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor. She informed us that contract negotiations are progressing and that the union appreciates the fact that the AFS has made a point of patronizing union hotels because of the expectation for fair labor practices. She also expressed disappointment that AFS had not been notified prior to arrival about this ongoing labor issue.

She informed us that the union is not asking us to move our event, and no strikes or picket lines will occur during our conference. The heads of the affected units at the Hyatt thanked us for our support and encouraged us to continue with our meeting as planned.

The Union bargaining committee also spoke to our executive director and thanks AFS for its support and is looking forward to welcoming us to the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor.  In keeping with the wishes of the workers at the hotel, we will not move forward with our alternate plans. We are letting the hotel management know that we expect them to move forward with good faith negotiations and encourage them to treat their employees justly.

Most Sincerely,

The Executive Board of the American Folklore Society
