Important Annual Meeting Update

Dear AFS conference attendees and members,

We were shocked upon arrival in Baltimore last night to learn that there is an ongoing labor relations situation involving the management and employees of the Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor and other major hotels nearby. There are meetings taking place today between union representatives and hotel management.

Our contract states that we were to be notified about any labor concerns as soon as they emerged, and we were not, despite regular communication with Hyatt hotel management.

As the situation unfolds, we are actively seeking information to understand the possible repercussions and our options moving forward. But let it be clear: we absolutely support the rights of the workers and stand by them in their efforts. We have reached out to the Unite Here Local 7 to learn as much as we can about this issue and await their response. For some background, see the story in the Baltimore Sun: https://www.baltimoresun.com/business/bs-bz-hotel-workers-contract-expire-20190927-74uteaigtfbwtbexgyw2die4ty-story.html.

As we work to find acceptable arrangements in moving forward, we recognize we have obligations to a wide range of stakeholders including our membership, and all our conference attendees who include international attendees, local Baltimore attendees engaged in a range of cultural heritage work, students, and all those who have already arrived or are en route.

Be assured that we are moving ahead with the meeting, although there may be modifications.

We are committed to transparency, and we will update you via email as soon as we learn more.

This is our top priority, and we are working non-stop to address this issue.

Most Sincerely,

The Executive Board of the American Folklore Society

Where is Archie Green when we need him? Have we lost the generation that was interested in labor traditions? You all have my most heartfelt sympathy having to deal with the situation as well as my support for your stand with the union and the gumption to tough it out. Have a grand convention.
