A preliminary agenda is now available for the Festival of Ideas, which will take place at the 2019 Annual Meeting on Thursday, Oct. 17, 6:00-7:30 pm, in Harborview at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor.

Nearly 40 people responded to a survey to share ideas about challenges, successes and concerns they’d like to discuss. The organizers coded, assessed and identified the following topics for conversation:

  1. Challenging white supremacy and institutional racism
  2. Artists’ concerns: livelihoods, partnerships, making the work work
  3. Managing collaborations: beginnings, middles, and ends
  4. Climate crisis
  5. Visibility and viability of folklore as culture and as a field
  6. Fieldwork, archival documentation, and accessibility
  7. Innovation and creativity in projects and partnerships
  8. The blessings and curses of social media

In order to ensure that people with overlapping interests connect with one another during the Festival of Ideas, there will be three rounds of discussions for attendees to explore these (and other) themes:

6:00-6:15: Table selections, brief introductions

6:15-6:40: Round One Discussion

6:40-7:05: Round Two Discussion

7:05-7:30: Round Three Open Forum - An opportunity to take the conversation where you would like it to go
