The Legends & Lore Marker Grant Program, funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation based in Syracuse, N.Y., has expanded to nine states over the past year thanks to new partnerships formed with state folklore and cultural organizations.

Established in 2015, the Legends & Lore grant program helps communities celebrate their local folklore and legends with roadside markers. This unique marker program is the only nationwide effort of its kind. Legends & Lore gives communities the opportunity to commemorate a part of their local cultural heritage that might not typically be found on a historic roadside marker. Some of the newest Legends & Lore marker examples are Champy the lake monster in New York State, the Ballad of Naomi Wise in North Carolina and the Alderson Lion named “French” in West Virginia. For additional examples of Legends & Lore markers, visit the Pomeroy Foundation’s digital marker map.

As this grant program continues to expand, the Pomeroy Foundation invites folklore organizations nationwide to consider becoming a Legends & Lore partner. Marker grants for this program are currently available in Alabama, Connecticut, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont and West Virginia.

Legends & Lore partners play an important role in the success of the program. The role of partners includes helping to ensure that the folklore is legitimate, accurate, and well-written so that it can be displayed on a marker. Benefits include: partner organizations receive an annual financial contribution and the organization’s name will appear on the credit line of each marker. Legends & Lore partners should be 501(c)(3) organizations, nonprofit academic institutions or state supported councils/agencies. For a complete list of current partners, visit our Legends & Lore partners page.

If you and your organization would like to become a Legends & Lore partner, contact the Pomeroy Foundation at  (315) 913-4060 or deryn@wgpfoundation.org. The Foundation will also be exhibiting at the 2019 American Folklore Society Annual Meeting and welcomes attendees to visit its exhibition booth.
