Last week the American Folklore Society joined with more than 25 other members of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) to sign a letter to the Turkish Constitutional Courts advocating for the protection of academic freedom and freedom of expression. This letter was written in response to recent events in Turkey, where criminal charges of "terror propaganda" have been filed against scholars and academics for signing the Academics for Peace Petition, a development perceived by many as politically motivated.

Two days after the letter was sent, the General Assembly of the Turkish Constitutional Courts ruled that the rights of 10 academics to freedom of expression were violated by the application of criminal charges. Read more about this important victory on bianet.
