Submissions are invited for a one-day workshop on the theme "Supernatural Religion in the Age of Empire," which will take place October 18, 2019 at the University of Antwerp.

This workshop brings together scholars who engage with cultural and social histories on the intersection of religion, science, and the supernatural in colonial contexts. Papers from PGs and ECRs who address methodological and theoretical issues in their work on supernatural religion in empire are particularly welcome, as are reflections on the dynamics of cross-cultural religious practices, beliefs, and phenomena across a range of methods and sources.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Racialized notions of “superstition” and “modernity”
  • “Hybridized” religious and mystical phenomena
  • Scientific knowledge production and experience
  • Supernatural landscapes and bodies in empires
  • Material culture of religious supernaturalism
  • Fictional and artistic representations

Proposals should be based on ongoing research to stimulate discussion.

Limited travel bursaries are available; please indicate in your correspondence whether you would like to be considered.
