The memorial conference, dedicated to the centenary of Boris Putilov and Kirill Chistov, will take place in Saint Petersburg, Russia, November 14–16, 2019.

The conference deals with developments of late Soviet and post-Soviet ethnology and folklore studies. S Scholars will reflect on the heritage of Soviet academic discourses, new approaches to ‘traditional’ subjects of both disciplines, their interaction in the late Soviet period, the factors that shaped the ‘Russian school’ in ethnology and folklore studies, and its place in contemporary humanities and social sciences. The conference is aimed at discussing the history of Soviet and post-Soviet ethnology and folklore studies in relation to the present state of the fields. How have research objects changed during this time? How are the disciplinary boundaries between ethnology, folklore studies, and anthropology drawn today?  What is the role of national academic schools in contemporary international humanities and social sciences? And to what extent is the term ‘national academic school’ still relevant today?
