ASF Invites Submissions for 2019 Translation Competition

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) has announced the opening of its 39th Annual Translation Competition for outstanding translations of poetry, fiction, drama, or literary prose written by a Scandinavian author born after 1900. Two prizes are offered: the Nadia Christensen Prize, which includes a $2,500 award, and the Leif and Inger Sjöberg Prize, which recognizes distinguished effort by an individual whose literary translations from a Nordic language have not previously been published. The Sjöberg Prize includes a $2,000 award. Excerpts from each prize-winning work will be published in Scandinavian Review (ASF’s illustrated journal) and prize-winners receive a commemorative bronze medallion.

The winners in the 2018 competition were Sherilyn Hellberg (Berkeley, CA) and Kelsi Vanada (Iowa City, IA). Ms. Hellberg received received the Leif and Inger Sjöberg Prize for her translation of Nike by Danish author Caspar Eric (b. 1987). Ms. Vanada received the Nadia Christensen Prize for her translation from Swedish of poems from Atlantis by Marie Silkeberg (b. 1961).
