With support from an external funder, Berea College seeks to engage the services of a public folklorist who is skilled in consulting, knowledgeable about Appalachian regional creative expression in all its breadth, and interested in working with students and community members. Berea College has long had interest in developing folklore/folklife initiatives that connect Berea, its history, and its students with the folkloristic traditions of culture bearers and communities in Appalachia.

During a 12-month period, the consultant will assess and evaluate Berea College’s current folk arts and cultures programming, while also looking for new initiatives that will best capture the dynamism of folk expression. The consultant will convene on- and off-campus stakeholders to design programs and initiatives that serve as a connector between academic programs, artists, established and new audiences, and traditions. Through this process, the College will seek to identify initiatives that reinforce cultural heritage and living traditions by supporting and expanding opportunities for traditional artists, performers, and culture bearers; assist communities and scholars throughout the region in the development of plans and projects to strengthen their own cultural traditions; and contribute and facilitate collaboration among those individuals, organizations, colleges and universities, and state government programs engaged in folklore/folklife activities.
