The Jewish Folklore and Ethnology Section of the American Folklore Society invites applications for the Raphael Patai Travel Grant of up to 300 USD for a student of Jewish folklore and ethnology to attend the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Folklore Society in Baltimore, Maryland, October 16–19.

This fellowship is awarded in memory of eminent folklorist and ethnologist Raphael Patai (1910-1996) who published 600 articles and over 35 books. He taught at many universities in Israel and the United States, including Hebrew University, Columbia University, Princeton University, and the University of Pennsylvania. The grant program succeeds a previous award for student papers.

To apply for the Patai fellowship, before Friday, July 31, 2019, send the following materials to section convener Dr. Simon J. Bronner at sbronner@psu.edu:

  • A cover letter with a description of your interest in attending the American Folklore Society annual meeting and your financial need to attend the conference (including other support you anticipate receiving to attend), your educational background and research in Jewish folklore and ethnology, and plans to engage with the subject of Jewish folklore and ethnology at the meeting (e.g., panels and workshops that will benefit your knowledge and research; and if applicable, your participation in the conference as a presenter).
  • A CV that includes education, presentation record, honors/awards, and publications.

Applications are vetted by a committee composed of members of the Jewish Folklore and Ethnology section, and notifications will be made before August 1, 2019.
