The 2018 American Folklore Society (AFS) Lifetime Scholarly Achievement Award was presented to Professor Simon Bronner at this year's Annual Meeting in Buffalo, NY.

Dr. Bronner is a uniquely productive scholar, a talented leader and administrator, and a very successful and dedicated mentor of students in folklore studies. His career is distinct because of his influence in the field of folklore, the importance of which cannot be overstated. He has had a distinguished career spanning four decades and four continents. He has played a distinct role in many academic lives and has been an unmatched exemplar for a successful scholarly career.

To quote from one of the letters supporting Simon’s nomination:

"[Simon Bronner’s] role as a ground-breaking folklorist is almost secondary to his herculean efforts to create and guide the Master's and Doctoral programs at Penn State Harrisburg. Due to his personal dedication and determination, and in a time when humanities programs are being scaled down, Penn State Harrisburg has become a hub for integrated folk and heritage scholarship under the umbrella of American Studies, issuing a Graduate Certificate in Folklore and Ethnography in addition to the graduate degree programs. Bronner's success as an academic mentor is evident in the scholars he has helped mold: men and women who currently teach, research, lead AFS sections and journals, and are blossoming academics in their own right."
