World Learning, an international nonprofit organization working to create a more peaceful, sustainable, and just world, is seeking U.S. cultural heritage organizations to participate in the 2019–2020 Communities Connecting HeritageSM  Program. Organizations that are selected as semifinalists receive capacity building in program design and development and are matched with an international partner organization to design a joint proposal for a unique cultural heritage project. Partners whose proposals are selected for funding receive further capacity building in project implementation and jointly implement their projects over a 5–6 month period.

Communities Connecting HeritageSM, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs that is administered by World Learning, seeks to celebrate unique cultures and build partnerships in the midst of global challenges. The program engages at-risk communities, empowers youth, and builds partnerships between communities in the U.S. and in key strategic world regions through exchange projects that explore cultural heritage topics. These projects will advance cultural heritage appreciation and preservation through community outreach and public education. The projects will initially be virtual and then will culminate in reciprocal in-person exchanges as well as public exhibitions. Organizations selected as semi-finalists will receive initial training in project design and development before submitting a joint project proposal with an international partner organization. Successful partners will have approximately six months to execute their projects. Throughout the program there will be significant guidance, facilitation, and support from World Learning.

Eligible Organizations:

  • Organizations that are invited to apply include, but are not limited to, art centers, cultural associations, historical sites, museums, libraries, and universities;
  • Ideal organizations will represent an aspect of the unique cultural heritage of their local community;
  • Organizations willing to invest time in capacity building and into forming their international partnership before project implementation will benefit the most from this program.

The application for 2019–20 is now open; to request an application, submit your information here.
