As AFS considers how to benefit local communities ravaged by recent hurricanes and whether taking our Meeting to these regions is feasible, there are ways members can directly support relief and rebuilding efforts. The Craft Emergency Relief Fund Plus (CERF+) was started by artists for artists in the craft community as a grassroots mutual aid effort in 1985 and has since emerged as the leading nonprofit organization that uniquely focuses on safeguarding artists’ livelihoods nationwide. CERF+ serves artists who work in craft disciplines by providing a safety net to support strong and sustainable careers through education programs, advocacy, network building and emergency relief.

To view videos about the work of CERF+ in Puerto Rico, visit their page of Artist StoriesClick here to read an article that Cornelia Carey, Executive Director of CERF+, wrote after her visit to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.

AFS members interested in contributing to ongoing hurricane relief efforts, are encouraged to visit CERF+’s website to find out more about how to donate to this organization. Special thanks to AFS Executive Board member Barry Bergey for sharing this information during our business meeting in Buffalo.
