AFS Launches Survey to Get Input from Independent or Contingent Workers

The AFS Committee on Contingent Workforce Concerns wants to hear about your experiences as a contingent laborer to better understand the breadth of the landscape of the contingent work.

The American Folklore Society seeks information about the scope and impact of contingent labor as a starting point for conversations about how the Society can better support this constituency as contingent labor becomes increasingly common in all sectors of the economy.  The survey focuses on U.S.-based folklorists working in “contingent,” or institutionally vulnerable, positions (e.g., contract- or grant-dependent workers in academic and public sectors, including semester/year-based academic appointments such as clinical faculty, post-docs, and other non-tenure-track faculty positions).

If you have been employed as a contingent worker in our field in the United States within the last ten years, please complete the survey.

The survey is anonymous by default. However, we invite you to contact the chair of the committee, Martha Sims ( if you would be willing to participate in further conversation.

The survey will close November 30.
