Our Annual Meeting provides a time and place to remember deceased colleagues. The Memorial Board and Table, inspired by the many folk traditions that commemorate the dead during the month of October, provides a special occasion for you to pay tribute to those who have died since the last gathering, and to all who are gone but not forgotten.

AFS will provide a draped table and poster board, pushpins, and slips of paper for sharing remembrances for those who would like to make use of these items. The Memorial Board and Table is customarily located in the lobby, not far from the registration desk, Thursday through Saturday. We encourage you to bring photographs of the deceased, printed obituaries, flowers, battery-powered votive candles and other mementos in honor of folklorists who have died and display them on the Memorial Board and Table for the duration of the meeting. Memorials here are not limited only to those who have died within the last year, but can include beloved mentors, friends and ancestors in our profession who are no longer with us and whom you wish to honor. Please remember that food and live candles will not be permitted.

In addition, we will continue our custom of memorializing all of our departed folklore family members at a reading of remembrances of those who have died in the past year as detailed in our revised memorial procedures. In 2018, a Time of Remembrance will take place immediately after the AFS Business Meeting on Saturday. Each remembrance will be limited to 250 words (approximately one double-spaced page). In order for the remembrance of a particular colleague to be included in this event, the person proposing to read it must submit the text of the remembrance to AFS Executive Director, Jessica Turner (afsexec@indiana.edu), by October 1. Only pre-arranged and pre-scheduled statements will be read at the Time of Remembrance.

After the annual meeting, we will publish these statements on the Society’s web site. We have established an In Memoriam portion of the AFS Review, which will better support collective remembrances of those we have lost.

These tributes are a beloved part of the annual meeting that require your participation and support. We hope the Time of Remembrance and the Memorial Board and Table will continue to grow organically, fueled by our memories and imagination, so we can remember and honor our beloved colleagues in community.
