University of California (UC), Santa Barbara is hosting an interdisciplinary mini-conference on “Cultural Sustainabilities” that honors recent AFS Executive Board member Jeff Todd Titon and features presentations by a number of AFS members, May 25–26, 2018.

The conference is driven by the proposition that environmental and cultural sustainability are inextricably linked, and brings together leading social scientists, humanists, and activists to address the premise that reversing or ameliorating the negative impacts of human behavior on the globe’s environment is at its core a human cultural question.

The ongoing work of Jeff Todd Titon (Emeritus Professor of Ethnomusicology, Brown University) inspires the presentations by an interdisciplinary roster of speakers including: Aaron Allen (Director, Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program, U of North Carolina at Greensboro), Barry Dornfeld (documentary filmmaker), Nancy Guy (ethnomusicology, UCSD), Mary Hufford (folklore, American Folklife Center, U Penn, Goucher College), Margarita Mazo (cognitive ethnomusicology, emerita, Ohio State), Tom Rankin (experimental and documentary arts, Duke), Joshua Tucker (ethnomusicology, Brown), Rory Turner (anthropology, Goucher College), and others.

All are invited to attend what organizers anticipate to be lively presentations and discussions on this generation’s most pressing issues.

For more information, contact Tim Cooley: Please use the subject SUSTAINABILITIES.

Sponsored by the University of California, Santa Barbara’s, departments of Music, Anthropology, Media Studies, and Environmental Studies, with support from UCSB’s Center for Interdisciplinary Study of Music and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center
