The National Humanities Alliance--the advocacy organization for the humanities in the US--writes:

The tax reform bill released by Congress last week would treat tuition waivers for graduate students as taxable income, increasing their tax liability.

Taxing students on a full year’s tuition—money they never see—would make graduate school unaffordable to many, including graduate students in the humanities. This would seriously deplete future generations of scholars and leaders.

Training graduate students in a wide range of fields is an investment in the future of our nation. Their graduate training gives them the tools to help us grapple with our biggest challenges and generate new ideas that improve our quality of life.

This change is one of several that would affect higher education institutions and students. Read the American Council on Education’s analysis of the full impact of the bill here.

Thank you for your advocacy!
