The American Council of Learned Societies, of which AFS is a member, conducts an annual survey of its 74 member societies. Until this year, the results of this survey were reported only through a quantitative summary, Learned Societies By the Numbers. However, the ACLS has just published the first annual Learned Societies Beyond the Numbers, a qualitative report on the goals and work of the very active and energetic group of US-based learned societies in 2015.

This publication, created by a team of ACLS society directors led by AFS director Tim Lloyd, features a general introduction, essays on four representative learned societies (one of which is AFS), and a gallery of short descriptions of notable recent activities from a number of societies. Hard copies of both ...Beyond the Numbers and ...By the Numbers are available from the ACLS, and PDFs of both are available through the links just above.
