Two back-to-back events in the American Folklife Center’s series, "Many Paths to Freedom: Looking Back, Looking Ahead at the Long Civil Rights Movement,” will be held this week in Washington, D.C. The two programs are scheduled to call attention to the fiftieth anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which occurs in August 2015.

1) On August 5, at 7 pm, the Library goes on a (short!) road trip to the Hill Center on Pennsylvania Avenue, Capitol Hill. The program includes a screening of the documentary This Little Light of Mine: The Legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer (2015) and a subsequent conversation with filmmaker Robin Hamilton & NPR host Michel Martin. The event is free, but advance registration is required at the Hill Center site to ensure a seat. Read more here.

2) On August 6, research scholar and educator, Emilye Crosby, will give a noon-time talk in the Mumford Room at the Library on the topic, “Teaching the Civil Rights Movement from the Bottom-Up Fifty Years After the Voting Rights Act.” Read more here.
