Staten Island Arts, an arts service organization and presenter, seeks a Staff Folklorist to run a year-round Folk & Traditional Arts Program. Reporting to the Executive Director, Staten Island Folklife works directly with traditional artists and their communities to present, document, and safeguard the traditional cultural resources found throughout the borough.

Over the past four years, Staten Island Arts Folklife has been under the direction of a single folklorist, and has established itself as a source of innovation, in the field of public sector folklore.

Applicant should have an advanced degree in folklore or a related field and have experience creating and producing public programming. Candidate should have field research skills (interviewing, recording, transcribing, photography/videography) and be computer literate (MS Word, Excel, email, internet) with some experience producing and managing digital content.

Additional skills preferred, but not required include ability to work with a wide variety of artists/organizations, knowledge of Spanish and/or languages other than English, grantwriting/fundraising experience, and a familiarity with the cultural traditions of Staten Island communities.

Job duties will include conducting regional fieldwork to identify and document folklife practitioners; planning and presenting at least 4 significant public programs based on field research each year, including exhibitions in a new 2,500 sq ft project space opening in Spring 2014; networking with local and regional organizations; providing technical assistance to local artists and organizations; assisting the Arts Council staff in organization-wide activities; and assisting in identifying and securing funding from public and private sources to support folk programs.

The staff folklorist is a full-time salaried position. Weekly hours fluctuate with demands of programs and frequently involve evening and weekends. Salary includes a benefits package including full health insurance. Target start date: March 24, 2014.
