Instructions for Submitting an Individual Presentation

We invite proposals for individual presentations on any focused topic that relates to folklore. The program committee will group accepted presentations into panels.

We will accept individual presentations in one of the four following formats:

1) short papers are allotted 15 minutes: 10 minutes to read the paper, followed immediately by 5 minutes for questions. Whenever possible, panels with short papers will be allotted additional time for discussion of the presentations and panel as a whole.

2) long papers are allotted 30 minutes: 20 minutes to read the paper and 10 minutes for discussion of the paper.

3) the Diamond format, a formalized presentation genre structured by time and images: Diamond presentations are seven minutes long and are organized around 21 slides that are set to advance automatically every 20 seconds. Diamond presentations will be allotted at least 10 minutes: 7 minutes for the presentation, 3 minutes for set up; additional time will be scheduled for questions for each presentation (times will vary depending on the composition of the panel).

4) media presentations will be scheduled with other individual presentations if they fit in a two-hour block. Proposals for media presentations will be easiest to schedule if they fit in 15-minute, 30-minute, or 60-minute blocks. See "Instructions for Submitting a Media Presentation" for important information about submitting media proposals.

Materials required for the online registration and proposal process:

  • Optional: keywords approved by the AFS Ethnographic Thesaurus that describe the content of the presentation. See Using Keywords in Annual Meeting Proposals before you register and submit your proposal.
  • a long (500-word) abstract which will be sent out for blind review
  • a short (100-word) abstract which will appear in the annual meeting program book if the proposal is accepted. Use AFS style.
  • Visa or Mastercard

  • You must submit your proposal no later than March 31.

  • AFS provides a projector and screen in all meeting rooms. If you require speakers, you must request them on the proposal form. AFS does not provide other equipment, such as laptops or DVD players.

  • Members: You must sign in to register and submit your proposal. Please make sure in advance that you can successfully sign in. If not, allow time to contact AFS.

  • Non-members: You may enjoy a significant discount on your Annual Meeting registration, as well as other member benefits, if you join AFS. However, the site will not recognize your membership until it has been manually approved by AFS staff; you will receive an email notification when your membership is activated. Please allow for a few business days in between joining AFS and submitting your registration/proposal. Join AFS by March 27 if you want to receive the member rate.

It is cheaper to pay both member dues and meeting registration than it is to register as a non-member. Save money — take the time to join AFS before you submit your proposal!
