2013 Archie Green Public Folklore Advocacy Award Nominations: Online Form

Established in 2009 in honor of the preeminent labor scholar and passionate advocate for the discipline of folklore (1917-2009), the Archie Green Award is presented by the Public Programs Section of the American Folklore Society to individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation and encouragement of folk traditions in the United States while operating professionally outside the field of public folklore.

The award is intended for living individuals whose work is allied or complementary to our field and has advanced the mission of public folklore. A monetary prize of $500 will be awarded at the time of the presentation.

The deadline for 2013 nominations is September 23, 2013. 

The award is presented at the AFS Annual meeting.

Award Criteria

  • Demonstrated positive impact on the preservation/perpetuation of tradition and/or on a specific traditional community. (Areas of impact may include cultural preservation, presentation, funding, advocacy, and/or community engagement.)
  • Significance and quality of contribution to advancing the field of public folklore
  • Thoroughness and strength of the nomination package, including support letters.

How to Submit a Nomination

All nominations and support materials must be submitted in electronic format through the online nomination form below. Please follow the directions for file types and upload only the requested supplemental materials.

A concise, well-crafted paragraph or two should suffice to make the case for the nominee.
You have the option of providing supporting documentation of the nominee's accomplishments in order to strengthen consideration of the nomination:

If you do wish to provide supporting documentation, please be judicious in your choices and submit in the following manner:

1) On the first page of a text document, provide a numbered list of the supporting documentation and indicate what it refers to , e.g., URL of Louis/e Smith's website; photographs of Louis/e Smith's workshop/museum display for cultural heritage preservation in Maine, 2010; essay by Louis/e Smith on the importance of local knowledge; URL of Youtube video of public talk/documentary featuring Louis/e Smith.

2) If you wish to submit images, paste a representative number of samples in the same text document with captions, or number the images and provide a cue sheet as part of the document.

3) Compile all documentation into one file, and upload as a single PDF, DOC, or DOCX file.

4) For all uploaded files, please name the file with the last name of the nominee and "support materials" with underscores in the file name e.g, " Smith_support_materials_Green_award.pdf"
Submit no more than three (3) letters of support that address the rationale for nomination and the stated review criteria. Letters from community members and colleagues are appropriate.

Compile the letters into one file, and upload as PDF, DOC, or DOCX. Please name the file with the last name of the nominee and "support" (Example "Louise Smith support")
