2018 Annual Meeting
Share |

The Society's 130th Annual Meeting will take place October 17-20, 2018, at the Buffalo Niagara County Convention Center, in Buffalo, New York, with guest rooms at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo. The theme for the meeting, on which presentations are encouraged but not required, is “No Illusions, No Exclusions.”

Register

Preregistration closed August 31. You may register when you arrive at the meeting at an on-site registration rate.

Program

You can now download a pdf of the full program book, including abstracts and indexes. The book will be distributed to attendees at the meeting with a printed version of the Program Addendum, which contains changes received since the program book was produced.

Alternatively, you can get a quick look at the schedule in the online program, which reflects all changes as they are processed; however, it does not contain supplemental information like abstracts and meeting information.

Contact lcashman@indiana.edu for questions about the program.

Presenters, inform AFS immediately if your plans change, so that corrections can be made to the program. Those who don’t contact us may be subject to penalties for cancellations or no-shows (see annual meeting policies).

Annual Meeting Policies

All attendees should familiarize themselves with our annual meeting policies on accessibility, appropriate behavior and social media use; presenters should also note policies about AV, cancellations and no-shows.

Getting There, Getting Around and Where to Stay

See Local information for more about booking a room at the conference hotel and flying or driving to Buffalo.

Plan to come early to find out why the New York Times called Buffalo one of its “52 Places to Go in 2018," or to venture out for many more sights worth seeing beyond Buffalo.

The Local Planning Committee has prepared two pre-conference tours on Wednesday, October 17; registration is required by August 31. They've also shared ideas for self-guided excursions for those who can extend their stay, or even for those who have a few hours to get away.

Ticketed Events

Advance registration is required by August 31 for ticketed events, including workshops, tours and a Saturday dinner/dance.

Mentoring Opportunities

Be a mentor or meet a mentor at the annual meeting. The AFS Mentoring Program pairs students or new professionals with established professionals so that each may get to know the other better. The Mentoring Committee will accept applications from mentors and mentees until August 1.

Letters of Invitation

Contact us at AmericanFolkloreSociety@gmail.com as soon as possible to request a letter of invitation if it is needed for your organization or visa application.
