Poster Presentation Proposal Form

Please use this form to propose a poster presentation for the AFS 2011 Annual Meeting. You must submit your  proposal no later than March 31, 2011.

In a format that is new to the 2011 annual meeting, individual poster presentations will be considered for inclusion in one of four curated exhibitions addressing the following themes: (1) War, Peace, Folklore, (2) Folklore and Folklorists Making a Difference, (3) Folklore Studies and the Digital Humanities, and (4) Musical Cultures. The poster exhibitions will be unveiled and discussed at an opening reception held Thursday morning and the exhibitions will remain prominently displayed in a designated exhibition hall throughout the meeting.

When submitting your poster proposal below, please select which of the four exhibitions to which you are submitting your proposal. Like all presentation submissions, poster abstracts will be reviewed, and if chosen, placed in the program by the Program Committee. A limited number of spaces are available in each exhibition.

To enhance the overall effectiveness of the exhibitions, contributors of accepted poster proposals will be asked to create posters that share certain characteristics. Among these will be a 4' by 4' format and the inclusion of a photograph of the presenter (to facilitate discussion of the posters throughout the conference). Unlike in past years, posters will be presented on dedicated poster panels (rather than easels). Each 4'x4' poster should be brought to the conference rolled up. Thumbtacks for mounting the posters to the panels will be provided. Posters can be claimed at the AFS meeting registration desk on Saturday. Each poster exhibition will include an overarching exhibition panel that introduces the exhibition theme and draws linkages between the individual posters included in the exhibition.

You must attach a Word document to this form containing your short abstract. Before you begin your submission, please read the form instructions below and then prepare the Word document you need so you can attach it to the form later in the process.

Form questions that are underlined have explanations or instructions that will appear if you hover your cursor over the question.

Keywords will help us schedule and index your paper, if it is accepted for the meeting program. Put no more than one topic in each field.
Please provide a 500-word abstract for your poster presentation in the space below, which will be forwarded to the Program Committee for evaluation.

Do not begin the abstract with the title of your presentation.

The review criteria are: 1) A clear thesis or analytical statement; 2) A coherent argument; 3) An indication of familiarity with previous research; and 4) The session's contribution to a deeper understanding of the poster exhibition theme.
Your 100-word abstract will be printed in the program book if your presentation is accepted for the meeting program.

In the text box below, please paste the text of the short abstract. Include only the text of the abstract itself—no presentation title.

The text box will not preserve bold, italic, or underline. If your text contains these print enhancements, please add a note at the end of the abstract (eg, “Italicize: Journal of American Folklore”).
If it seems that nothing happens when you hit Submit, look for an error message at the top of the form. You may have missed a required field. If that doesn't work, request a new math question.

You will go to a confirmation screen when your proposal is successfully submitted. If you have further questions during business hours, call 614-292-4715.
