A Week of Uniquely Inspiring Training, Planning, and Collaboration
CWI Summer Institutes provide a unique opportunity to dive deeply into place based education, service-learning, and principles of sustainability. Understand why service-learning works, how it works, and how to maximize It's effect with your students.

About the Location
CWI’s Summer BARCELONA takes place at the American School of Barcelona. Barcelona is an enchanting seaside city with boundless culture, fabled architecture, and a world-class dining scene. Barcelona is the capital and largest city of Catalonia—which deeply values it’s own sense of place. Located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range, Barcelona’s influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world’s major global cities. Barcelona is the 10th-most-visited city in the world and the third most visited in Europe after London and Paris. Though it has a population of over three million, Barcelona feels much smaller and more accessible than typical cities of its size. Most attractions are easily seen on foot.

Who Should Attend

Each year, CWI’s Summer Institute participants include a highly diverse group of K-16 teachers, community based educators, administrators, and program leaders from across the U.S. and around the world. The Summer Institutes meet each participant where they are and are appropriate for both veterans and beginners. In addition to expert training, the Institute provides a rich environment for collaboration and the synergy of ideas and experience.

Expert Training, Curriculum Planning, and Powerful Collaboration

CWI's Summer WEST, EAST, and BARCELONA Institutes are facilitated by veteran CWI faculty members. Each Summer Institute has it's own distinct flavor and guest presenters. Events focus on curriculum design, using field tested service-learning best practices and principles of sustainability, to engage K-16 students in academically based service that contributes to sustainable communities. CWI emphasizes both instructional and site level best practices that will serve classroom, program and administrative educators equally well.

An Exceptional School Team Planning Opportunity

CWI Summer Institutes are extremely effective for school and community based teams. Teams from K-16 schools, districts, and community organizations are able to use the week's learning, tools, and retreat like setting to maximize opportunities for creating school or program wide buy in and deeper implementation. Service-Learning, Community Engagement, and Invested Learners

Service-learning represents the most comprehensive strategy for achieving the learning and growth outcomes that educators share. With its emphasis on real world application and problem solving, service-learning provides one of the most effective ways to fully immerse and invest students in their learning. From pre-school to higher education, the focus is on extending academic learning through meaningful application and community engagement.

A Week of Accomplishment

Spend an intensive and deeply rewarding week immersed in service-learning, sustainability, and place-based education. With educators from across the U.S. and around the world, CWI's Summer Institutes deepen practice through interactive training designed to maximize learning, growth, and accomplishment. Participants learn to use CWI’s model for service-learning best practice, with both an instructional and "site level” focus. Fostering student voice is a core component. The week includes ongoing opportunities for dialogue with experienced faculty practitioners and peers. Structured planning and reflection time is provided for individual and group work.

CWI Institute participants will join leading teacher practitioners of knowledge based problem solving who emphasize student learning experiences that are compelling and grounded in the application of knowledge in service to the community.
