Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu, Romania, with its partners – The National Complex Museum ASTRA, Sibiu; the Augustin Bena Cultural Centre, Alba; and the University 1 Decembrie 1918, Alba Iulia – is organizing the 14th conference edition of the Centre for Social Studies, under the auspices of Professor Gheorghe Pavelescu (1915-2008). The conference will be held October 15-18, 2015 in Sibiu, Romania.

Professor Pavelescu was well-known for his field research which took a particular interest in magic, folklore and folk beliefs, ethnography, folk medicine, marginalized ethnic groups, museology, and literature. He published 20 books and more than 200 articles in professional journals. His relationship with and admiration for the scholars who guided him, and his support and encouragement of young researchers never flagged. This celebratory conference focuses on the same values – whether expressed by experienced researchers or enthusiastic young scholars – who hold the same interests as Professor Pavelescu.

The organizers aim to bring together professionals from different geographical areas on topics of contemporary interest from an anthropological, ethnographic, and sociological perspective.

Suggested Topics (suggested by the organizers, but not limited to them):

  • Magic, religion and folk (complementary) medicine
  • Rethinking folklore and literature
  • Customs, traditions, and housing
  • Contemporary ethnographic aspects
  • Migration and transculturally in the contemporary world
  • Monographic studies
  • Museology
  • Social marginalization in the contemporary world
  • Mentalities in the 21-st century

Abstracts (~200-250 words) should be submitted by October 10. Further information about the conference and abstract submission should be found at, or requested via e-mail.
