The theme for the 2015 interdisciplinary SWES conference is "Transitions” and what that means to the disciplines we work in - across English, the Humanities, Arts, Business, Politics, Sciences, Social spheres, and Technology. The concept is often relevant to scholars in many fields and especially to those whose work straddles the boundaries of one or more disciplines.

Definition: We talk about transitions between time periods, technologies, genres, social movements, sciences, mathematics, design and how big and small ideas permeate movements in society. What this theme should then encourage is the ability to demonstrate analysis and hold discourse on topics related to transitions applicable to any and all disciplines.

Of particular interest are presentations that encourage audience participation and discussion, and contribute closely to the conference theme and to questions concerning aspects of the following:

Examples for conference topics:

  • Transitions in the Humanities: historicism, humanism, trans-humanism, literary criticism, postmodernism, intertextuality, film studies, creative writing, visual and performing arts, social change, sociology, folkloristics, ethnopoetics
  • Transitions in Language and Literacy:linguistics, etymology, teaching, language acquisition, English as a Second Language, cross-culturalism, multiple literacies, genre studies, composition studies, conversation analysis
  • Transitions in Teaching: multimodal and multimedia pedagogies, English for Special Purposes, Writing in the Disciplines, hybrid classroom, plagiarism, World Englishes, Critical thinking pedagogy
  • Transitions in Academia: interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies, hybrid epistemologies, ontologies
  • Transitions in Identity: gender studies, race and mixed race studies, post-colonialism, border studies, monster theory, trans-studies, genealogy
  • Transitions in Technology and the Internet: cybernetics/cyborgs, emerging technologies, game theory, digital humanities, social media and communications, mash-ups, re-mixes, blogging, wikis, Creative Commons, Hypertext, Surveillance studies
  • Transitions in the Sciences and Mathematics: methodologies, discourse, research, research design, science and the humanities, medicine, engineering, eco- and bio-sciences, physics, applications of science in various contexts, the effects of science and scientific discourse on society, science and the imagination
  • Transitions in Environment: sustainability; animal-human relationships, eco-criticism, ecofeminism

We welcome 250-500 word abstracts for sessions, panels, workshops, and/or roundtable proposals from graduate students, postgraduates and early career scholars. Because the theme of the conference is inclusive and interdisciplinary, it provides focus for a dialogue while encouraging the creative connections across several areas of graduate student scholarship. Creative pieces will be accepted if they are accompanied by an explanation of how the work contributes to the overall theme of the conference.
