The New York Folklore Society is pleased to announce its upcoming student conference and a call for the submission of papers. Since 2010, the New York Folklore Society has produced a one-day conference showcasing the work of students and emerging scholars. In 2013, we especially invite paper proposals which focus on maritime culture and occupational folklore.

"A Life on the Water: Maritime Culture and Occupational Folklore" is the theme of this conference, hosted by ArtsWestchester and produced in collaboration with ArtsWestchester and Long Island Traditions. The conference in White Plains, New York will coincide with a joint exhibition of the maritime occupational traditions of boat building on the Hudson River and Long Island’s Sound and South Shore, jointly produced by ArtsWestchester and Long Island Traditions. Conference attendees are encouraged to view the exhibition and a related public program that will take place in association with the conference.

This multidisciplinary conference welcomes papers and presentations based on research in maritime culture, including but not limited to narratives, occupational folklore of the maritime professions, customary lore, or skilled crafts related to New York’s relationship to its rivers, harbors, and coasts. Research on the folklore of other occupations is also welcome. While the regional focus of submissions is not circumscribed by geography, we especially encourage papers related to the cultural traditions and occupational lore of New York State and the tri-state region of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

White Plains is located in New York's lower Hudson Valley and is easily accessible by car or by public rail transportation (MTA)from New York City. It lies in close proximity to Connecticut and Long Island.

For further information or to download a submission form, please visit the website of the New York Folklore Society at Deadline for paper submissions is January 2, 2013.
